Winter weddings in Sussex

Most couples still aim for a summer Saturday, which is exactly why winter is worth a look. From November to March many Sussex venues and suppliers have far more dates free, and some offer lower prices outside the main season.

What winter does well

Log fires, candles and fairy lights in a country house or a barn. Christmas trees and greenery already in place in December. Crisp walks on the Downs or a windswept beach for photos. Guests who are free, because there is less else going on.

Plan for the light

In December it is dark before half past four. Put the ceremony earlier, around midday, so you still have light for photos afterwards. Talk to your photographer about a short slot outside straight after the ceremony, and lighting for the evening.

Plan for the weather

Pick a venue where everything can happen under one roof, or close by. Have a plan for coats and umbrellas, and somewhere warm for guests to wait. Country lanes can be muddy or icy, which is another reason to book guest transport rather than leave everyone to drive and park in the dark.

Flowers and food

Ask your florist what is in season: winter greenery, berries, amaryllis and dried flowers look lovely and keep costs sensible. Warm food, mulled wine and hot chocolate go down well, and a mobile bar can do winter cocktails.

Start with venues across Sussex and ask about their winter dates.
