Questions to ask wedding suppliers before you book

Most wedding suppliers are lovely, and most problems come from things nobody thought to ask. A few questions up front save a lot of worry later.

For every supplier

Are you free on our date, and can we hold it while we decide? What exactly is included in the price, and what costs extra, such as travel, set-up or overtime? How much is the deposit, when is the balance due, and what happens if we need to change the date or cancel? Do you have public liability insurance? Can we see full examples of your work, not just the best bits? Who will actually turn up on the day?

Photographers and videographers

How many hours are included? When will we get our photos or film, and how? Have you worked at our venue before? What happens if you are ill on the day? See photographers and videographers.

Venues and caterers

What is the maximum number for the meal and the evening? Can you cater for allergies and dietary needs? Are staff, crockery and clearing up included? What time does the bar close and the music stop? See venues and caterers.

Bands and DJs

Can we see a live video? How much space and power do you need? Will you work with our venue's sound limiter? Can we choose a first dance and a do-not-play list? See music and DJs.

Transport

Are you licensed to carry passengers for hire? Can your vehicle reach our venue? Is the return trip included, and how late will you wait? See cars and travel.

Get it in writing

Whatever you agree, ask for it in a written quote or contract: the date, times, what is included and the total price. Then save your favourites to your shortlist and ask them all for prices in one go.
